Andhra Pradesh is No. 1 in tourism

DELHI is on an image- maker drive. But despite spending crores of rupees to spruce up its tourist facilities for the Commonwealth Games, the Capital failed to win any major prize in the prestigious national tourism awards.The best state for creating tourism infrastructure went to Andhra Pradesh. Rajasthan won the best state prize for offering a variety of tourism projects.However, the Humayun’s Tomb saved the day for Delhi.

The Mughal era monument along with Bhima Devi temples at Pinjore in Haryana won the best maintained tourist- friendly monument award.Interestingly, Andhra Pradesh, which has maximum number of domestic tourists visiting the state, went on to win awards in six different categories.

The state’s award list includes the following: Awards for innovative adventure tourism activity, best tourism friendly golf course and best tourism- film. The Visakhapatnam Urban Authority won a special award for the best civic management.Among other states, Sikkim won the best state award in the north east region — a third for the state. Karnataka won the publicity material award.The most innovative use of information technology award went to the Kerala government for running a popular tourism website.
